Centre Manager

Y Wal is Ceredigion's first dedicated indoor climbing wall — community-owned, and about to open its doors in Cardigan. We're looking for a Centre Manager to be the day-to-day heartbeat of the place: the person who makes sure everything runs safely, smoothly, and warmly for everyone who walks through the door.

Between now and our launch in spring 2027, much of the role is desk-based: setting up the policies, procedures and governance a new centre needs, and project-managing everything involved in getting ready to open. Once we're open, it becomes a hands-on role — you'll be on the floor supervising sessions, running inductions, coordinating our volunteer team, and keeping the centre's admin and safety standards in good order — all while helping build a genuinely welcoming community space from the ground up.

In the lead-up to launch (now – spring 2027)

• Writing and putting in place the policies and procedures we'll open with — health & safety, safeguarding, risk assessments, operating procedures and emergency plans
• Helping set up good governance: supporting the board, keeping on top of compliance and insurance, and reporting to funders
• Project-managing the run-up to opening — keeping track of the build, suppliers, budgets and deadlines, and keeping everyone pulling in the same direction
• Getting the admin systems we'll run on ready — memberships, bookings, waivers and bookkeeping
• Recruiting and training our first volunteers ahead of opening day

Once we're open

• Running the centre day-to-day: opening/closing, bookings, membership queries, and supervising the climbing floor during sessions
• Recruiting, coordinating and supporting our team of volunteers
• Keeping on top of health & safety — facility checks, first aid cover, risk assessments and incident reporting
• Handling the everyday admin that keeps a small organisation ticking: membership records, waivers, basic bookkeeping
• Being a friendly, confident presence for members and visitors of all ages and abilities

What we're looking for

Essential: strong organisational and people skills, confidence with desk-based admin, planning and written work, comfort working independently and managing volunteers, good general IT literacy, and genuine enthusiasm for climbing and community sport. You don't need a climbing or first aid qualification to apply — we'll provide your first aid training.

It's a bonus if you've worked in a climbing wall, leisure centre or similar customer-facing role before, have project management experience or have helped set up policies and governance for a charity or community organisation, hold a climbing instructor/supervisory qualification, or have experience managing volunteers or basic bookkeeping/till systems.

Hours: minimum 3 days a week, with some flexibility needed to cover evenings/weekends in our busier months (April, June–August). Exact days to be agreed.
